Game-Worn Jersey

August 132010

During my years in college, I made my money by working at the UPS store in a wealthy suburban neighborhood in Kansas City. One of my common customers was Kansas City Royals well known baseball player, George Brett. George played third and first base for the Royalsfor a long time and is considered one of the best players to ever play for the Royals.

One infamous incident that George Brett is well known for is when he hit a home run that was initially disallowed by umpires. Then, at a later date, baseball officials got together and ruled that the home run would stand. The home run was initially disallowed because he had used more pine tar on his bat than was allowed by Major League Baseball’s rules. After the umpires decided to remove the home run from the scoreboard Brett stormed out of the dugout and had one of the more famous arguments in baseball history. To Brett’s and the Royals’ delight, after further review it was determined that the excessive pine tar did not contribute to his hitting of the home run and the initial call was reversed. The controversial call also cost the Kansas City Royals the game versus the New York Yankees so MLB’s solution was for the two teams to re-play the last four outs left in the game after the incident about a week later before an empty stadium.

Off the field, Brett frequently came into the UPS store where I worked to ship game-used memorabilia to fans and collectors. Often, he was sending back some sports memorabilia that fans had sent him to autograph for them. The sports memorabilia that he was sending usually consisted of items like a game-worn jersey. Autographed baseballs that were used in actual games were also being sent to fans and personal friends of Mr. Brett’s.

George Brett has many different opinions about him as a person in Kansas City. No matter how you feel about George Brett, there is no doubt that he is one of the best players who ever played major league baseball and will be a legend in Kansas City for quite a while. He still works within the Royals organization today and often also serves as a live commentator during their games. George Brett will always be a local celebrity in Kansas City and many people even eat at his restaurant that is located on the Plaza, in downtown Kansas City. If you ever wanted a piece of the Royals, Mr. Brett delivered.

Sport Memorabilia Blog Post

August 122010

While traveling through Orlando, Florida, I stopped into the local, annual sports memorabilia convention. If you are into sport memorabilia like I am, specifically game-used memorabilia this store is a one to see. Game-used memorabilia means items that were on the player or utilized in play during a game. The things most searched for are usually a Game-worn jersey or autographed baseballs. I myself bought a game-used jersey that was worn by the great Cal Ripken Jr, the legendary shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles, which he had on during a home game in July of 1985. He was one of my role models and idols in baseball when I was a kid.

This convention had everything a memorabilia collector could ask for. If you were looking for a baseball autographed by the 1929 Chicago White Sox or the jersey of a famous record holder that he or she actually wore, or even if you were in search of an unknown and hard to find athlete’s memento, then you were likely to find it at this sport memorabilia convention.

Now while I personally focused on the baseball memorabilia, since I am a huge fan of the sport of baseball, I did notice that the store was just not for a baseball fan. In fact, this convention covered almost every type of sport offered. Even the common sports such as basketball, football, golf, tennis, soccer and so on, all the way to the much more obscure sports such as lacrosse, track and field, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, and on and on and on. Orlando’s sport memorabilia convention really that had it all!

Collecting is an investment and like all investments it has a level of risk involved. Some of the great players of today might get hurt and not be able to complete their expected career arc. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a sure way to give a boost to the value of collectibles for that player. Conversely, if a player is not able to finish out their career due to getting hurt, suspended or otherwise, then that can damage your investment. Other things can affect the value of a players’ game-used memorabilia like bad choices in their personal and professional lives.

Take Billy Ripken who spit in the face of an umpire or Pete Rose who was caught gambling on a game for instance. This is why I advise not to do it for the money and just for the entertainment.

Symptoms Of A Meniscus Tear

August 92010

You will find levels of meniscus tear, each having its own symptoms as follows:
Moderate Tear – Pain slowly grows and you feel it either in the side or center of the knee joint. Swelling heightens and restricts the mobility of one’s knee. Even though you are able to still walk, you’ll have the sensation of your knee being rigid. You can also experience a sharp excruciating agony when rotating the knee or squatting. Severe Tear – As the ripped cartilage moves to the joint area, the knees could be shaky and it can, at anytime, give way. You could hear clicks on your knees and you’ll experience locked knee. You may feel serious limitations in the mobility of your knee and the ability to walk.

Derek Jeter, Et Al

August 92010

Let me set the stage for you. The New York Yankees regular pitcher, A. J. Burnett was on the shelf injured so he was substituted by Dustin Moseley. Moseley pitched the New York Yankees to the 7 – 2 win over the Red Sox in the Sunday night baseball game. Unquestionably the storyline of the game was Derek Jeter passing the Bambino, Babe Ruth for the lead amongst the Yankees in hits. He did this while driving in three runs.

In other news on Sunday evening with the New York Yankees, Teixeira hit his 25th homer to become just the fourth player in history to hit at least twenty-five homeruns in each and every year of his first eight yrs. New New York Yankee Lance Berkman may have won some Yankee fans over with his two doubles without one of them hitting Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had missed Saturday`s win after he was struck in the left leg during batting practice with Berkman at the plate. The bruise had passed and A-Rod felt so nice he swiped a base. Not since May 8th has he stolen a base. Together with his 600th home run hit up against the Toronto Blue Jays, he has now added his 300th stolen base of his career.

My Career and My Hobby

August 82010

I am the proud owner of over a dozen guns. I have to carry one for my job but I am also an avid hunter. I take great pride in gun ownership but I take even more pride in responsible gun safety. I am a police officer, a hunter, but most importantly a father of three. I’m sure my kids are just like I was when I was there age. Kids are very nosy and they are always trying to learn more about the world they live in. I can say for certain that my kids will never get their hands on one of my guns because I lock them in gun safes. I have one for my handguns I use for work and another for my hunting rifles. If you are a gun owner please be careful and do the same.

Plyometrics for Runners

August 52010

There may be a few runners who prefer easier plyometric drills just like hops and skips to set up routines and spice things up or simply to improve calorie burn up. Those athletes who resort to this kind of training are committed in attaining their goal of being more explosive in short races.

Runners who have the right conditioning and flexibility are the only ones allowed to try plyometric drills and even with their experience, they are highly advised to ask help from an expert trainer. This can be attributed to the explosive movements that are naturally involved with plyometrics. Higher risks of injury are found in individuals who have not been into intense workouts or are not following instructions before engaging in plyometrics. Safety precautions should be complied with before performing these exercises.

Game-Used Memorabilia Analysis

August 52010

Sport Memorabilia is big business nowadays. There are millions of people who make their living buying and selling items such as baseball cards, game-worn jerseys, bats, hockey sticks, autographed baseballs, hats, and so on.

There are both collectibles made by companies and then items used in the actual event called Game-Used Memorabilia. If it has to do with sports, someone is probably collecting it and trying to make money off of it. Some people do this on the internet by setting up their own web page, posting items for bidding on eBay, or posting advertisements on sites such as Craigslist in the hopes of shipping their memorabilia to customers all over the world. Some have simply opened up store front shops where customers can walk in, look at, and bid on or outright purchase some sport memorabilia.

Some collectors dabble in every sport, some only focus a select few if not just one. Some collectors might specialize in certain teams or players too. No matter which collectibles the seller is into, there is big money to be made if they have the right stuff.

The business of sporting memorabilia has become controversial one. It has produced many shady dealers and cynical collectors who both alike have lost the true meaning of sportsmanship and what collecting should be about. Many professional dealers will use little kids at event to try and get the players into signing more items than normal, in an effort to squeeze out one last autographed baseball or bat. It is sad, but the secret is out and players now know if an older gentlemen or woman wants several bats and balls signed at once, they are most likely trying to make a profit and that’s not what it’s all about. People will sometimes wait for hours after the big game for a chance to meet a player and maybe get an autograph. These true fans should have to complete with someone who is there to make some fast money.

Major League Baseball is trying to authenticate memorabilia like a game-used jersey and other items as to stop the counterfeiting that is plaguing the industry. Now that it has become business instead of a hobby, it seems that anything goes with all of the money involved. MLB and other professional leagues should be applauded for stepping in and trying to insure that all items are authentic. Ideally this will keep everything on the level, but more likely than not the game of cat and mouse will continue.

Detroit Native Going Home

August 42010

Up to late June, Mike Modano was a Dallas Star. Dallas made a decision to not sign him. This left Modano without a team for about five weeks. He knew he wasn’t quite ready to hang the skates up so he went home.

Modano, a native of suburban Detroit was signed to a one year contract playing hockey with the Wings. Tuesday, the Associated Press received a text from Modano confirming his decision.

American born, Modano has scored more goals with the National Hockey League as compared to any other American player. He’s 40 years old and has played for the Minnesota and Dallas Stars. The Stars decided in late June to not sign Modano. Since then he’s spent the past five weeks going over his options.

Former team mate Marty Turco helped him decide while they were golfing in Scotland. Turco, a goaltender just struck a deal with the Black Hawks.

Modano signed a one year contract the Red Wings. He released this to Dallas magazine Scoreboard Monthly. He said that the only thing he was sure of was he didn’t want to retire.
